Can I return the headset if I do not like it?
ANSWER
Our 30 day money back guarantee allows you to try on the headset in your aircraft for 30 days. This is the best way to determine if the headset is going to work for you. If you do not like the headset for any reason, you may receive a refund of the full purchase price, minus the cost of shipping.
What comes with the headset initial purchase?
ANSWER
The headsets all come in the semi-rigid nylon carrying case. Inside the case with the headset you’ll also get six pair of the medium size canal tips which is on average a six month supply. In addition, one smaller and larger pair also comes with the initial purchase as samples to try.
Does it require batteries?
ANSWER
All the headset models will function as aviation headsets with their full noise attenuation without any batteries. The Link only needs batteries to use the wireless music and cell phone functions.
Wearing The Headset
How do I put it on?
ANSWER
The headband goes around the back of the head, not over the top. Just think of it like putting glasses on backwards.
How often should I change the tips?
ANSWER
Just change the tips for hygiene reasons; the polyurethane foam does not crumble, harden or yellow over time. One month of use for one pair is a good rule of thumb. Be sure to change them between users.
How do I get a good seal in my ear with the canal tips?
ANSWER
Pinch or squeeze the foam tip between your thumb and index finger to compress the foam. While the foam is compressed, insert the tip into the outer ear canal. Allow the foam tip to expand until it creates a snug seal. We recommend that pilots pinch or squeeze the tips before inserting. Rolling may cause the tip to loosen or unroll off the threaded screw mechanism. The rolling action can also cause too much stress on the earpiece wires over time.
Should I use a custom ear mold?
ANSWER
We do not recommend custom ear molds for a variety of reasons. The Comply®Canal Foam will supply 5 decibels better noise suppression than a custom ear mold. This foam acts like a self-sealing memory foam and will comply to the outer ear canal much better than a custom mold. The seal is maintained throughout the changing shape of the ear canal during head turning, yawning, chewing and swallowing, unlike a hard, custom ear mold. Use of a custom ear mold also voids the three year warranty.
Are the foam eartips more comfortable than an earplug?
ANSWER
Yes. The eartips are made of polyurethane foam as soft as skin. This makes the eartips much more comfortable for long haul trips.
Do you have a microphone on the right?
ANSWER
Our microphones only originate on the left. However, because the design is so different from traditional headsets, flight instructors and first officers widely use Clarity Aloft headsets from the right seat.
Technical Information
Why would I need a headset with TSO certification?
ANSWER
Only specific US air carriers require pilots to use TSO certified headsets. If this requirement is written into the operations manual, then commercial airline pilots know it is required.
I need a headset that has been TSO certified. How do I tell if mine is?
ANSWER
The United States FAA regulations that govern headsets with Passive Noise Attenuation are: TSO-C58a & TSO-C57a, or the newest certification, TSO-C139a. The applicable certifications are written on the back of the volume control box of the Pro and Pro Plus headsets.
What enabled the Clarity Aloft Pro and Pro Plus headsets to pass the TSO testing?
ANSWER
The Pro headset was designed and tested to meet the rigorous requirements of FAA TSO standards. Technical Standard Order is specified by the Federal Aviation Administration in the USA. European certifications are not applicable.
Is there an automatic mute function for listening to music in flight?
ANSWER
The Clarity Aloft Classic, the Clarity Aloft Pro and the Clarity Aloft Pro Plus do not have automute. However, the headset is designed with a lower music volume by 4-5 decibels in favor of louder speech communication. As a result, pilots will never miss a communication from ATC and other pilots. Music will be produced at a pleasant background intensity, never interfering. On our LINK model, the Bluetooth unit provides automatic fade out of music. But with all four models, there is an emphasis on the sound quality and accuracy focusing on speech sound communications for safety in flight.
What are the functions on the volume control box?
ANSWER
Please note that on all four headset models, there is a mono/ stereo switch on the side of the volume control box so that the headset can be compatible with the audio panel of any aircraft. Stereo sound is well suited for music as well as speech. The 1/8th inch music input is ready to use for iPod, MP3 players and other types of music devices. The music port cannot be used with a cell phone. It is for listen-only functions.
Hearing Protection
Are these headsets noise canceling?
ANSWER
Yes. Clarity Aloft headsets provide robust noise dampening across the full frequency spectrum. From low pitch sounds to high pitch sounds, you will receive between 30 to 47 decibels (dBA) of noise attenuation, providing hearing protection in high noise environments, no matter what aircraft you fly.
Do these headsets use Active Noise Canceling?
ANSWER
No. They do not need to provide ANR because the noise blocking characteristics of the advanced foam ear canal tips take the unwanted and potentially harmful ambient noise of the aircraft down to a safe listening level.
My aircraft is very noisy. How can a non-earmuff type of headset protect my hearing?
ANSWER
Because speech sounds are heard between 400 Hertz and 6,000 Hertz, those are the pitch areas where you most need to protect your hearing for communication purposes. Clarity Aloft headsets provide 35-45 decibels (dBA) of noise reduction in that area. This is better protection than found in most ANR headsets.
I get tired from the low engine rumble. How much does this headset help with that?
ANSWER
You will find 29-30 dBA of noise attenuation in the low frequencies, comparable to the best ANR headsets.
Do you have data from a reliable source concerning noise attenuation?
ANSWER
Yes, the EarCAL Laboratories tested the use of the foam tips in real ear conditions.
Specialized Uses
Can Clarity Aloft Headsets be used in a helicopter?
ANSWER
Yes, you just need an adaptor that converts the dual plugs (from general aviation usage) to the single plug use. You can order the adaptor from Marinair Technology Limited..
I have a hearing loss. Can I use this headset with my hearing aid?
ANSWER
Because our headset uses high quality hearing aid speakers, the pilots who have hearing impairment just remove their existing hearing aids before putting on our headset. A balance control can be adjusted to favor one ear with louder sound. We have many pilots who have a range of hearing problems from mild to moderate.
I fly Aerobatics. Can I use this headset for my aerobatic routines?
ANSWER
Yes. Aerobatic pilots are big fans of this headset because of its lightweight nature. Pulling negative and positive G’s can put a strain on the head and neck in a typical conventional headset. Ask for an adjustment band at the time of purchase to help tighten the headset for maneuvers.
Can the Clarity Aloft headsets be used with handheld and portable radios?
ANSWER
